What is an Artist?

An Artist is more than someone who paints, writes, photographs, sculpts, or makes music. An Artist is someone who creates an entire world in their media, they are world-builders.  They are people that notice the atmosphere, lighting, mood, textures. An aesthetic experience. Artists come alive when they explore, share beauty, experience, hear, touch, create.

Artists Create Worlds.

This is by far, my favorite description.

Artists are world-builders.

A Filmmaker builds one with characters and scenes.

A Novelist builds one with sentences.

A Fashion designer builds one through silhouette, texture, and identity.

A Photographer builds one inside a frame.

A Musician can build an entire world inside four minutes of sound.

But we build smaller worlds all the time.

The atmosphere of our homes, the traditions inside our families, the way we host people, the clothes we choose, the places we travel, the photographs we keep, the music playing while dinner cooks, the flowers on the table, the books stacked beside the bed or the stories we tell ourselves about who we are allowed to become.

Maybe living creatively means realizing that your life itself contains materials.

You have color, space, time, memory, relationships, taste, language, movement, environment.

You are constantly arranging them.

And while we cannot control everything that happens to us, we have more creative agency than we sometimes realize over what we build from what we have been given.

The Artist Wonders.

Artists are often deeply curious people.

They ask questions that don't always have practical answers.

-Why does this place make me feel something?

-Why am I drawn to this color?

-Why do certain memories stay with us?

-Why can one photograph make someone cry?

-Why do humans decorate their homes when four walls would technically be enough?

-Why do we write poems about heartbreak when simply saying I'm sad would communicate the information?

Because human beings don't only want information.

We want meaning, symbols, stories, experiences that make us feel more alive.

Artists feel—and then they translate feeling into form.

The artist lives somewhere inside that search.

So, What Is an Artist?

I don't think an artist can be defined only by occupation.

An artist is someone who notices deeply, feels deeply, imagines possibilities, and gives some part of that inner experience a form.

Sometimes that form hangs in a gallery, sometimes it becomes a photograph, sometimes it becomes a song, sometimes it becomes a beautifully set dinner table, sometimes it becomes a business, sometimes it becomes a garden, sometimes it becomes a story. Sometimes it simply becomes a life intentionally arranged around beauty, curiosity, experience, and meaning.

You don't need an audience, you don't need a degree, you don't need thousands of followers, you don't even need to be particularly good yet.

You need curiosity and the willingness to respond when something inside you whispers "I want to make something from this."

That is an Artist.
