There is just something magical about fall—the warm colors, cozy layers, golden light, and the perfect excuse to gather your favorite people close. Choosing outfits can feel like the hardest part, but it does not have to be! This guide will help you coordinate rich, timeless looks that feel natural, photograph beautifully, and still let every member of your family’s personality shine!

One of the most important details- The Colors!
For fall family photos, I recommend choosing two or three main colors and adding one or two neutral shades to balance everything.
Coordinate Instead of Matching
A mixture of complementary colors usually creates a more natural and visually interesting photograph than everyone wearing the exact same colors.
TIP: Begin with one person’s outfit—often Mom’s—and build the rest of the family’s clothing around it.
Colors that photograph beautifully with my editing style include:
Rust, terracotta, burnt orange, and cinnamon
Burgundy, wine, plum, and deep berry
Olive, moss, and forest green
Mustard, ochre, and muted gold
Chocolate brown, espresso, and camel
Black, charcoal, and deep navy
Taupe, beige, oatmeal, cream, and warm nude tones

Choose Texture Over Busy Patterns
Texture adds warmth and dimension without distracting from your family’s faces and connection.
Beautiful fall textures include:
Chunky or fine-knit sweaters
Linen and cotton, Corduroy, Velvet
Flowy dresses and skirts
Cardigans, jackets, and layered knits
Simple Accessories
Try to limit the family to one pattern, such as a fall floral and surround that with solid colors.
Skip stark whites and bright colors
Bright white can feel harsh beside the warm, earthy tones of fall and may pull attention away from the emotion of the photograph. Choose cream, ivory, oatmeal, beige, or warm taupe instead.
I also recommend avoiding neon shades, vivid primary colors, and highly saturated colors. These shades can reflect onto the skin and may not blend naturally with my warm, moody editing style.
Black paired with warm colors can add an editorial feel to your portraits.
Don't forget the shoes
Shoes are often visible in full-body photographs, so they should feel intentional.
Good fall options include:
Brown, black, or tan boots
Neutral loafers, leather shoes
Neutral ankle boots
Avoid brightly colored athletic shoes, worn flip-flops, and footwear with large logos unless they are an intentional part of your family’s personal style.
